The Third Annual No Hops Gruit Ale Contest invites all brewers—professionals and homebrewers—to a challenge of the ancient craft of brewing. We look to celebrate the secrets of old recipes while exploring new ways to exploit traditional botanicals in enhancing the flavor of and preserving beer.
Rules
Ingredients & Style
*Target style is the historic “Gruit Ale” which isnot a BJCP category. For reference, this beer would qualify as category 23 under BJCP.
*At least 50% malted grains. Meads are excluded. Braggots, for example, would not be if ingredients include at least 50% malted grains.
*Zero hops permitted. The point of the competition is to experiment with botanicals (herbs, spices,etc) other than hops.
Submission
*Submission must be at least 64 OZ of beer.
*Submissions must be accompanied by a complete list of ingredients.
*All submissions must be delivered to Liam Flynn’s Ale House.
*Submission must be labeled with name, phone number, and email address of competitor.
Judging
*Hedonistic judging will be used. This is not a BJCP-sanctioned event. Judging will be conducted by a celebrity panel plus the over-21 attendees of the event.
Competitors
*Open to all brewers: amateur homebrewers as well as professional brewers.
